Shinobu Mailo Poll, a distinguished Chuukese nurse and advocate for women’s rights, left an indelible mark on the Federated States of Micronesia during her tenure as the President of the Chuuk Women’s Council (CWC) from 1997 until her passing in February 2009.
Born on 15 September 1938, Poll’s educational journey included attending Moen Elementary School, Truk District Intermediate School, and the Pacific Islands Central School. Her dedication to healthcare led her to graduate from the Trust Territory School of Nursing in 1958. Poll’s nursing career, highlighted by her role as Chief Nurse at Chuuk State Hospital, saw her pursue further training at the University of Hawai’i.
Beyond her medical career, Poll emerged as a community leader and a pivotal figure in women’s organizations. She co-founded the Trukese American Women’s Association in 1960 and the Young Women’s Association in Moen in 1963. Her involvement extended to the Women’s Christian Association of Moen, where she became president in 1975. Poll’s significant contributions include being a founding member and, subsequently, the President of the Chuuk Women’s Council. Under her leadership, the CWC flourished, implementing impactful programs such as micro-grants for women entrepreneurs and health education initiatives focusing on diabetes and HIV/AIDS.
Poll’s legacy endures through her daughter Christina Stinnett, who succeeded her as CWC President in 2010. In her will, Poll bequeathed land to the CWC, leading to the establishment of the Shinobu M. Poll Memorial Center in Nepukos, Weno. This center, supported by the government of Japan, stands as a testament to Poll’s enduring commitment to advancing women’s rights and healthcare in Chuuk State.
