Sarah Platt Haines Doremus, an American philanthropist, born in New York City. She early became interested in founding permanent homes and hospitals, particularly for women.
She helped to establish the Isaac T. Hopper Home for women discharged from prison, the House and School of Industry for poor women, and the New York Woman’s Hospital.
Mrs. Doremus was officially connected with various benevolent institutions, besides working for a half century in behalf of foreign missions.
Her efforts in behalf of the sick and wounded soldiers, both North and South, during the Civil War occupy an important place among her many noble works.
