Maud Powell, an American violinist, born in Peru, Illinois. After studying in Europe with Joachim, she returned to the United States in 1885, and devoted herself to concert playing with the most important orchestras of the country.
Miss Powell soon established herself as the foremost American woman violinist, distinguished alike for the musical quality of her tone and the masculine breadth of her style, and she deserves high commendation for bringing out new works for the violin, especially by American composers.
