Italian Mannerist painter Lucia Anguissola was the younger sister of the renowned painter Sofonisba Anguissola and, according to one biographer, could have “become a better artist than even Sofonisba” if she had not died relatively young, around age 30. We cannot be sure of her age, as both her birth and death dates are uncertain. Modern critics consider her skill excellent, and her paintings – mostly portraits – are similar to her sister’s, whom she likely trained with.
