Julia Lermontova, the first Russian woman to earn a doctorate in chemistry, was born in St. Petersburg in 1846.
She studied at the University of Heidelberg and Berlin before receiving her doctorate from the University of Göttingen in 1874. Lermontova was inducted into the Russian Chemical Society in 1875 and died in 1919.
