Ismat Chughtai was an Indian Urdu writer known for novels, short stories, and films. Starting in the 1930s, she focused on themes like female sexuality, middle-class life, and social conflict from a Marxist angle. Her realistic writing style made her a notable Urdu voice in the 20th century. She received the Padma Shri from the Indian Government in 1976.
