Ives Heraldine “Ma” Rock left an indelible mark as a trailblazing figure in both education and politics. As the first woman elected to Parliament in Saint Lucia, she shattered gender barriers and became a catalyst for change.
Rock commenced her career as a public relations officer for the St. Lucia Banana Growers Association before venturing into politics in 1964. She played a pivotal role in the United Workers Party, eventually becoming its first vice-president. Although initially unsuccessful in the 1964 parliamentary elections, she secured a seat on the Castries Town Board later that year.
In a historic triumph, Rock emerged victorious in 1974, securing the parliamentary seat of Castries South East. This victory made her not only the first woman to hold political office in Saint Lucia but also positioned her as a groundbreaking figure in Caribbean politics. Subsequently, she became the first female government minister, serving in various capacities, including Minister of Housing, Community Development, Local Government, and Social Affairs from 1974 to 1980.
After deciding not to contest the 1982 general elections, Rock continued her service as a senator on the government side until 1987. Beyond politics, she contributed to public and private sectors, serving on notable boards, such as the St. Lucia Electricity Services and the Development Control Authority. Recognized for her outstanding contributions, Rock was invested as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) and served as a Justice of the Peace from 1965. Her legacy remains a testament to her groundbreaking achievements and enduring impact on Saint Lucian society. Ives Heraldine “Ma” Rock passed away on August 31, 2012, leaving behind a legacy of empowerment and inspiration.
