Helen Irene Battle was a trailblazing Canadian ichthyologist and marine biologist. Helen Battle was the first Canadian woman to attain a PhD in marine biology. Her pioneering spirit extended to her laboratory-centered approach, setting her apart as one of the early zoologists to embrace intensive laboratory investigations, in contrast to the prevailing trend of field research at the time. As a testament to her enduring contributions, she held the title of emeritus professor of zoology at the University of Western Ontario starting in 1972.
