Gloria Guardia was born in San Cristóbal, Venezuela in 1940. Though raised and educated abroad, as an adult she opted, like her parents, for Panamanian and Nicaraguan citizenship. She is the author of several novels, including El último juego (The Final Game) (1977), Libertad en llamas (Freedom in Flames) (1999), and El jardín de las cenizas (The Garden of Ashes) (2011). Her honors include the Bellagio Creative Arts Fellowship, the Ricardo Miró National Novel Prize, the Ricardo Miró National Essay Prize, the Central American Novel Prize,and Finalist for the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Prize. Guardia is also a journalist, working as the Central America correspondent for the Latin American Agency (ALA) for nearly thirteen years and an ABC news correspondent in Panama for nearly eight. She is currently a member of the Panamanian Academy of Letters, the Colombian Academy of Letters, and the Nicaraguan Academy of Letters, and is a corresponding member of the Spanish Royal Academy. She is also the vice president of PEN International and president of the PEN International Ibero-American Foundation. She died in 2019 in Bogotá, Colombia.

Gloria Guardia nació en San Cristóbal, Venezuela, en 1940. Aunque creció en el extranjero, de adulta adoptó la ciudadanía de sus padres, panameña y nicaragüense. Guardia es autora de varias novelas, entre ellas, El último juego (1977), Libertad en llamas (1999) y El jardín de las cenizas (2011). Sus más importantes distinciones incluyen la Beca del Centro Bellagio, el Premio Nacional de Novela Ricardo Miró, el Premio Nacional de Ensayo Ricardo Miró y el Premio Centroamericano de Novela. Además de su contribución literaria, Guardia es también periodista, siendo corresponsal para la Agencia Latinoamericana (ALA) en Centroamérica por varios años, y para la cadena de noticias ABC News en Panamá. Actualmente, es académica de número de la Academia Panameña de la Lengua, de la Real Academia Española, la Academia Colombiana de la Lengua, y de la Academia Nicaragüense de la Lengua. Guardia murió en el 2019 en Bogotá, Colombia.
