American actress, screenwriter and producer Gertrude Berg was one of the first women to create, write, produce, and star in a long-running radio hit when she premiered her serial comedy-drama The Rise of the Goldbergs (1929 to 1946). “The Goldbergs” premiered on U.S. TV on CBS on 17 January 1949, one of the first TV sticoms, and ran until 1956. It was also written by, produced by and starring Berg, who won the first-ever Emmy Award for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1950 for her performance. Berg also adapted The Goldbergs into a play, Me and Molly, in 1948 and a 1950 film The Goldbergs. It was also adapted into the 1973 Broadway musical, Molly, and a comic strip from June 8, 1944, to December 21, 1945. Berg won the 1959 Tony Award for Best Actress for her performance in A Majority of One.
