The Trotter School is named in honor of William Monroe Trotter (1872-1934), a prominent African American newspaper editor and activist who co-founded The Guardian, a newspaper dedicated to civil rights. Geraldine Pindell Trotter (1872-1918), the wife of William Monroe Trotter, served as the associate editor of The Guardian and was deeply committed to the cause of racial justice. She raised funds for St. Monica’s Home and advocated for African American troops during World War I. Her dedication and efforts were acknowledged by her husband, who called her his “fallen Comrade” who gave her life “for the rights of her race.”
