Soviet track and field athlete Galina Petrovna Bystrova won a bronze medal at the 1964 Olympics in the pentathlon. She also competed in the 80-metre hurdles at the 1956, 1960 and 1964 Olympics, coming fourth in 1956. She won three European titles in the pentathlon (1958, 1962) and hurdles (1958), set three world records in those events and won six national titles in the pentathlon, hurdles and long jump.
Bystrova originally trained in gymnastics before meeting her future husband and coach, Vasily Bystrov, who convinced her to switch sports. After retiring from athletic competition, she became a coach, though she later developed osteoarthritis from her years of intensive training.
