Emily James Putnam, an American author and educator, daughter of Judge James C. Putnam, of Canandaigua, New York, where she was born. After graduating from Bryn Mawr in 1889 she married George Haven Putnam, the publisher.
For some years Mrs. Putnam was President of the League for Political Education, and Vice President and Manager of the Women’s University Club, New York
Besides translations from the Greek, she is the author of The Lady: Significant Phrases of her History (1903), which the North American Review declared to be “the most brilliant book of essays ever written by an American woman.”
