Clara Pinto Correia was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1960. She is the author of over 50 books of fiction and non-fiction. Her first novel Agrião! (Watercress) published in 1984 was followed closely by her second one: Adeus, princesa: crime imperfeito (Farewell Princess) (1985), which was made into a film in 1992. Most of her non-fiction work is about biology, the discipline in which she earned her doctorate degree. Her scientific book Ovary of Eve: Egg and Sperm and Preformation (1997) is translated into English, and Return of the Crazy Bird: The Sad, Strange Tale of the Dodo (2003), was published in English. Pinto Correira is also a newspaper columnist, actress and translator of literature like Flannery O’Connor’s complete stories and Gulliver’s Travels. As a Fulbright Fellow, Pinto Correira spent the 2014 to 2015 academic year researching at Amherst College in Massachusetts.
