From Famous Women: An Outline of Feminine Achievement Through the Ages With Life Stories of Five Hundred Noted Women. Written by Joseph Adelman, published 1926 by Ellis M Lonow Company:
Cecilia Beaux, an American painter, born of French descent in Philadelphia, where she studied with William Sartain.
After working abroad several years under various masters, she settled in New York, and soon became distinguished for her portraits of women and children. The art of Miss Beaux is thoroughly modern and unconventional, with a fine feeling for color, and an ease and freedom of treatment.
Miss Beaux has won a place among the most eminent of American painters, and among her many honors are the medals of the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh (1899), and the Exposition Universelle in Paris (1900).
