Thákane

Lesotho

The daughter of a Basotho chief, Thákane led a band of warriors on a hunt to kill a nanabolele (water-dwelling dragon). When they got to the river, they met an old woman who took them to her deserted village – the nanabolele had eaten everyone except the old woman, whose skin was too touch from a lifetime of hard work. She hid them and when the nanabolele returned, the hunting party waited for them to go to sleep. Thákane killed one in its sleep, and the hunting party left, with the gift of a pebble from the old woman. When the rest of the nanabolele awoke and came after them, Thákane threw down the pebble, which grew into a mountain, cutting off the nanabolele’s pursuit. The story concludes with the traditional ending of all Basotho tales: ke tsoma ka mathetho, “this is a true tale of the Basotho people.”
