Dr. Janelle M. Silva has dedicated years of activism in the classroom to teaching students of all ages about power and social structures in the Pacific Northwest.
In 2021 Fernandez started the organization Empowering Latina Leadership & Action, ELLA, with many workshops for women who want to expand their knowledge on leadership, citizenship, and sexism.
She founded the group known as ‘Wall of Moms’, a group of mothers dedicated to protecting protestors from the military tactics used by federal agents and local law enforcement during peaceful protests.
A prominent writer, poet, and instructor, Claudia Castro Luna served as Washington state’s 5th Poet Laureate from 2018 to 2021, becoming the first immigrant, woman of color, and non-native English speaker to take up the prestigious position.
Esperanza Spalding was gifted with a natural talent for music. Not only is she an amazing jazz singer, but she can also play the upright bass at the same time, a skill that takes most musicians years to be able to do. While her music is categorized as jazz, she incorporates elements of R&B and Brazilian music into her songs.
