A folk tale of the Zhuang people, Sanjie was an incarantion of a lark and started speaking eloquently when she was only one. At age three, she already had a melodious voice and by her teens, she was regarded as the region’s top singer of folk songs. Coveting her beauty and talent, a local tyrant named Mo Huairen wanted her as his concubine, but she was not interested. Rejected, the angry Mo plotted to murder her, but she managed to escape with the help of her love and fellow villages. The two lovers eventually found freedom by turning into a pair of larks.
