As her cartoons for Ms. Magazine in the 1980s demonstrate, Signe Wilkinson addressed women’s issues early in her career. Her talent for tackling such serious topics as pay inequality with strong doses of humor is evident in many cartoons on a wide variety of issues. In her hard-hitting visual commentaries she demonstrates a talent for conveying messages with irony, deftness, and visual richness. Strong concerns in her work include the rights to privacy and freedom of expression. The first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning, Wilkinson began her career at the San Jose Mercury News, then moved to the Philadelphia Daily News.
