Danielle Mitterrand joined the French Resistance as a teenager during World War II, and was later awarded the Resistance Medal for her work. She met her future husband while helping to care for wounded Resistance fighters, and would go on to serve as first lady from 21 May 1981 to 17 May 1995 when he later become president of France. She was politically outspoken on many internal and international causes, particularly human rights violations.
