Maryse Condé was born in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe in 1937. She is the author of over ten novels, including Sègou (2 volumes, 1984-85), Moi, Tituba, sorcière …Noire de Salem (I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem) (1986), and Traversée de la mangrove (Crossing the Mangrove) (1992). She is also the author of numerous plays, books of short stories, and of essays and articles on African and Caribbean literature. Condé was awarded the New Academy Prize in Literature on 2018, and she has received other honors such as the Carbet de la Caraïbe Prize, the Marguerite Yourcenar Prize, and the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for fiction. She has taught francophone literature at various universities, including The New Sorbonne, Nanterre, Jussieu, UC Berkley, The University of Virginia, The University of Maryland, Harvard, and Columbia. Currently she splits her time between Pointe-à-Pitre and New York City, where she is Professor Emeritus at Columbia University.

También es la autora de varias obras de teatro, colecciones de cuentos y ensayos sobre literatura Africana y del Caribe. Entre sus honores se incluyen el Premio Nobel Alternativo de Literatura (2018), el Premio Carbet de la Caraïbe, y el Premio Hurston/Wright Legacy para ficción. Condé ha servido como profesora de literatura francófona en varias universidades, entre ellas La Nueva Sorbona, Nanterre, Jussieu, UC Berkley, University of Virginia, University of Maryland, Harvard University, y Columbia University.
