Amanda Berenguer was born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1921. She is the author of more than fifteen collections of poetry, including Quehaceres e invenciones (Chores and Inventions) (1963), Composición de lugar (Composition of Place) (1976), and La dama de Elche (The Lady of Elche) (1987). Her poems have been published in numerous anthologies and translated into several languages. Berenguer was awarded the Bartolomé Hidalgo Prize for Poetry, the Reencounter Poetry Award, and the Extraordinary Ibero-American Poetry Prize. She was also named honorary member of the Uruguayan National Academy of Letters. Her body of work is associated to the Generación del 45 (Generation of 45), an influential literary movement that helped shape contemporary Uruguayan culture and identity. She died in 2010 in Montevideo.
