American poet, journalist, speaker, feminist and disability rights activist and consultant Laura Herhshey used a wheelchair due to muscular dystrophy. Known for actions like parking her wheelchair in front of buses, she led protests against the paternalistic attitudes and messaging that infantilized people with disabilities, particularly from Jerry Lewis’s MDA Telethon. She wrote a regular column for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, as well as writing for her own website, Crip Commentary, and various magazines and websites. Her writing was characterized by wit, strong, clear argument structures and a refusal to be limited in her life and her work.
