Dame Monica Jessie Dacon has left an indelible mark as a distinguished schoolteacher, educator, and politician. The widow of esteemed parliamentarian St. Clair Dacon, Dame Dacon’s life and career exemplify a commitment to education and public service.
Having attended The Girls’ High School, Dame Dacon embarked on a teaching career in 1952, starting at her alma mater and the Boys’ Grammar School. Her educational journey saw her teaching in Trinidad and Tobago before returning to St. Vincent to contribute to the Bishop’s College, Kingstown, in 1966. Demonstrating her leadership, she served as the acting Principal of Bishop’s College and later dedicated nearly fifteen years to The Girls’ High School.
Dame Dacon’s passion for learning persisted, leading her to achieve the St. Vincent Teachers’ College Certificate in 1980 and, two years later, her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of the West Indies. Transitioning to tertiary education, she became a respected lecturer at the St. Vincent Teachers’ Training College.
In recognition of her exceptional service, Dame Dacon was appointed Deputy Governor General in 2001. Following the passing of Sir Charles Antrobus, she assumed the role of acting Governor-General until the appointment of Dr. Frederick Ballantyne in June 2002. Her distinguished contributions were further acknowledged in 2010 when she was named Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the Birthday Honours/Overseas and Diplomatic List.
